Bird Grooming Guide

Wing and Nail Clipping

Bird Crazy recommends wing and nail clipping every three months for large birds and every two months for small birds, though these times can vary from bird to bird. If you bird starts to fly or becomes uncomfortable to hold prior to this, feel free to bring them in sooner. Checking the wings for growth is a good way to tell if your bird has flying potential. Ask a senior employee to show you how you can tell if new feathers are growing in.

Note: Determining when a birds nails need to be cut should be based on their length, not sharpness.

Bathing

Bathing is a natural part of a bird's hygiene routine. Birds with high dander such as greys, cockatoos and cockatiels need a bath at least three times a week to keep their feathers in optimal condition. A light mist from a spray bottle works well if they do not bathe themselves. All other birds need at least one or two baths a week. Birds from very wet regions will often bather themselves daily.

Notes:

  1. Never put a wet or damp bird near a cool draft.
  2. A good bath means that the down feathers under the surface feathers also get wet.
  3. If your bird gets stained ( Lipstick, pens, toy coloring, etc. ), there are cleaning products available in-store at Bird Crazy. Ask an employee for assistance with choosing one.
