Cockatiel and Parakeet Care

Millet

Your new bird is a newly weaned baby. As a baby, millet is an important food. For the first 3 - 4 months, millet should be available to them at all times. After the first initial months, millet should be used as a treat only. Millet is a high carbohydrate food which makes it great for keeping weight on younger birds.

Food and Water

When birds eat, they drop the empty seed hulls in their food bowl. Even though the bowl looks full, it may only have hulls on the top which your bird might not dig through. Having an extra set of disinfected dishes to change out every other day is a great way to prevent bacteria buildup as well.

Fresh foods are vital to your new bird's health. Your bird has been eating wet mix at  the store and will benefit from the continuation of this routing. See the food sheet for specific kinds of fresh food to feed. Variety in your bird's diet is very important.

Toys

Toys are very important for the mental development and well being of birds. In the cage, at any given time, there should be three to four toys for your bird. These should be rotated on a weekly basis. A combination of plastic and wood toys should always be available. Birds are very intelligent and need toys to stimulate their minds, and keep them physically healthy. It is common for understimulated birds to begin to pluck themselves, so it is important to keep them occupied.
